Like a kid in a candy store...

Greetings from Savannah, Georgia.  We've spent two (soon to be three) nights in the luxurious Microtel Inn. As we turned the corner to the hotel to check in Mark tells me that this chain of hotels has won awards...here's what we know now:  They didn't win an award for their continental breakfast, pleasant smell, clean swimming pool or friendly staff.  I've digressed before I've even started.

Yesterday we had big intentions of walking through the historic squares, visiting River street and taking the kids to Savannah's Candy Kitchen.  Having visited Savannah many times and having an infatuation with taffy (and candy, in general), I determined this to be THE BEST candy store ever.  An hour later the kids were still determining which confections were worthy of their allowance.  We all walked out with lighter wallets and heavy bags full of taffy, tuttles, pralines, candied pecans, pop rocks, suckers, starbursts, caramels and smarties.  Parenting fail?  Maybe.  Oh well.  By the time we finished our visit to the candy store we were all tuckered out--candy won out over a walk through historic squares and beautiful gardens this time.
Today we went to Tybee Island for a visit to the beach and the Crab Shack.  Typical day for us...lounge, swim, dig for seashells, good food, more swimming.  FUN!
We lived in Georgia for 6 years so the  following reflections are based on more than the few days we've been visiting.  Fast food isn't really fast here.  You forget about this when you leave then you come back and order food, fast food, and you wait an alarmingly long time and then you're reminded, again, that they are in no hurry to serve you.  While you're waiting for your cheeseburger you go to the public restroom and it's foul.  Urine on the toilet seat starts immediately when you cross the Tennessee border and continues through all southern states with the exception of some parts of Florida...I will not speculate on that point.  And last, we are spoiled with the public parks in Wisconsin.  The parks here are begging for some attention (ahem, property taxes...thank you).  Snarky reflections all done.  The south also has a beauty and charm like none other (and fried chicken that will make you weep).  ATL tomorrow, HOLLA!

Milo wanted to get a flight of soda the next time Mark got a flight at a brewery.  From left to right:  Arnold Palmer, Ginger Ale, Sprite, Coke and Mr. Pibb.  He did NOT like the Arnold Palmer.

They are the only ghost-white children in the ocean...but they won't burn thanks to Mark's thorough slathering job.

Odelia asked me if she could write "Big Trip".  This is her work...

Good-bye Tybee!
